Code Compliance in Chimney Repair Projects
The State of California and local jurisdictions have given us numerous building and fire safety codes, many of which apply when repairing, modifying and installing chimneys and fireplaces.
Our crews are fully trained on these codes, and we guarantee that all our work will be in strict compliance with them.
Here’s an overview of some of the services we offer.
Chimney Cap Repair & Installation
A chimney cap sits atop a chimney as a guard against incoming water, debris and small animals. Eventually when a cap becomes damaged or rusted, or when its mesh sides are split or broken, it can no longer do its job.
We can repair minor chimney cap damage. In most cases, the best option is to basically replace the cap.
Chimney liners protect the chimney structure and the home from intense heat and flames. They provide a smooth channel for the drafting of smoke and dangerous combustion gases. When sufficiently damaged, the result can be a house fire or carbon monoxide in your living spaces. We use a product called ThermoCrete to smooth out damaged chimney liner surfaces and seal off gaps and splits. This product is the #1 choice in the chimney industry for this purpose.
Chimney Crown Repair & Rebuilding
A cracked chimney crown will allow water into the chimney system. This can eventually lead to widespread deterioration within the system and the growth of dangerous mold. Minor cracks in a chimney crown can sometimes be filled in. However, heavy crown damage usually requires rebuilding.
Chimney Flashing Repair & Replacement
Chimney flashing seals the gap between the chimney and the roof. When flashing is rusted out, unseated or warped, water can move down into the home.
Some flashing problems can be repaired. Although typically, we’ll recommend having the flashing replaced.
Smoke Chamber Parging
The smoke chamber just above your firebox is designed to funnel smoke up into the flue. Damage to the chamber’s surfaces can allow heat and combustion gases to escape.
Ragged edges in the chamber will collect large amounts of creosote, which is highly flammable. We use a spray called Smoktite to parge smoke chambers. This seals cracks and holes and smooths out the surfaces.
Brick Replacement & Tuckpointing
When chimney bricks and mortar are failing, water can move in. This can cause deterioration of the masonry along with serious damage to interior areas of the chimney, the roof and other parts of the home. We replace damaged bricks and use a process called “tuckpointing” to replace crumbling mortar.
Cracks in a firebox’s refractory panels can lead to a house fire and allow carbon monoxide and other gases to move into the home. We can repair minor firebox damage. Also, if the panels are severely damaged, we’ll replace them.
Chimneys in serious decay often need to be rebuilt eventually. Chimney rebuilding can focus on specific sections within the structure or the entire structure from the roof up. Most importantly, our chimney masons know how to rebuild your chimney in a way that restores safety and efficient performance while making the structure look aesthetically pleasing atop your roof.
Before any chimney repair work begins, we’ll do a thorough overall inspection.
This way, you’ll know exactly what the problem is, how we’ll address it and what the cost will be for chimney repairs.
