Have You Fallen for Any of These Common Chimney Waterproofing Myths?
Water is a chimney’s #1 enemy. As such, it needs to be kept out of the bricks and mortar that make up your chimney’s masonry. One of the best ways to keep water out is with chimney waterproofing. Unfortunately, some homeowners believe the myths surrounding this practice and choose not to have it done.
Chimney Sweeps Inc. of Lakeside, CA, would like to show you why this is a bad choice.
Chimney Waterproofing Myths
Don’t fall for them.
The chimney looks fine. It doesn’t need waterproofing.
Looks can be deceiving. Bricks are porous and can easily take on water without you being aware of it. However, over time, the water will seep into the brick and cause deterioration from the inside out. If this is happening to a lot of your chimney’s bricks, you could end up with:
- Big holes and gaps in the masonry through which more water will flow
- Eventual damage to the interior parts of the chimney and fireplace system
- A chimney that leans to one side
- A chimney that collapses entirely
The guy who replaced some of my bricks said waterproofing isn’t necessary.
We’re guessing “the guy” wasn’t a certified chimney professional, because no professional would tell you that. Only a proper chimney inspection by a qualified technician can assess the condition of your chimney’s masonry. Chimney inspectors know all the early signs of chimney damage and water intrusion, so they’re the only ones you should listen to.
This is just another add-on expense to make chimney companies rich.
First of all, chimney companies don’t get rich, no matter how much they “add on.” Second of all, chimney companies that offer waterproofing services are actually losing money: a properly waterproofed chimney will incur less damage, which means fewer opportunities for the companies to come out and make costly repairs.
Most of the dangerous water entering a chimney comes in from the top.
Without a chimney cap, water can come in from the top of the chimney and cause all kinds of problems. But the top is only one place where water can intrude. Older or damaged bricks and mortar are two other places – and they’re the places that lead to the greatest widespread chimney damage.
I have a chimney liner. Why do I need chimney waterproofing?
We’re not sure how this myth got started. A chimney liner isn’t in place to guard against water. Its job is to provide safe drafting and the containment of flames, heat, and combustion gases. Whether or not you have a chimney liner, your chimney masonry needs to be waterproofed.
There’s no need to do anything until you see evidence of a leak.
So says the homeowner who may soon face a sizeable bill for major repair work to the chimney and parts of the home. As noted above, a qualified chimney inspector can spot the earliest signs of damage and situations that could lead to damage. Don’t trust your eyes. Trust the professionals.
